Introduction to Engineering Interactive Lab Kit

EGS1006 Model

The EGS1006 Interactive Lab Kit is a comprehensive, hands-on engineering experience designed to supplement introductory engineering courses.

Originally developed for the University of Florida’s EGS1006: Introduction to Engineering course, this kit was built to solve a common problem: students were being asked to choose an engineering major without meaningful exposure to what engineers actually do.

This kit changes that.

What This Kit Does

Instead of passive exposure to slides and career overviews, students:

  • Build and wire functional electromechanical systems

  • Analyze real engineering data

  • Explore multiple engineering disciplines

  • Engage in structured, guided technical activities

  • Develop problem-solving and systems-thinking skills

Each activity is designed to introduce foundational concepts from 12 different engineering fields in a tangible, memorable way.

Designed for Real Classrooms

The kit is:

  • Compact and backpack-friendly

  • Durable and reusable

  • Structured for course integration

  • Scalable to large enrollments

  • Suitable for in-person or hybrid delivery

Every activity was built with implementation in mind — minimal instructor setup, repeatable procedures, and clear documentation.

What Makes This Different

Most “intro engineering” experiences are conceptual.

This kit is physical – students wire components, measure real signals, observe cause and effect, and build working systems.

It creates a bridge between theory and practice at the earliest stage of engineering education.

Built from Research

This kit was developed alongside academic research on remotely accessible and portable engineering labs. It has been used in real university settings and evaluated for student engagement, stress, and perceived value in major selection.

It is not a novelty product – it is a curriculum-aligned instructional tool.

Ideal For

  • University introductory engineering courses

  • Community colleges

  • Dual-enrollment programs

  • Engineering-focused high schools

  • Homeschool STEM programs

  • Summer bridge programs

What’s Included
